Walk into any fish store and you'll see hundreds of species. Most of them are not for beginners. Some need perfectly stable water, some are territorial, some grow to 12 inches. Here are the species that are genuinely forgiving, beautiful, and easy to keep.
1. Guppies — the perfect beginner fish
Guppies are the #1 beginner fish for a reason. They're colorful, active, cheap, and incredibly hardy. They tolerate a wide range of water parameters and eat almost anything. Males are stunning with flowing tails in every color. The only downside: they breed like crazy — keep all males if you don't want fry.
2. Zebra Danios — indestructible
Zebra danios were literally used to test the safety of new tanks in labs because they survive almost anything. They're fast, playful, and schooling fish — get at least 6. They tolerate cold water, warm water, high ammonia, and beginner mistakes. If you're cycling a new tank, danios are what you add first.
3. Corydoras Catfish — the tank cleaners
Cory cats are bottom-dwellers that scavenge leftover food and keep the substrate clean. They're social and need to be kept in groups of 6+. Peaceful, cute, and endlessly entertaining to watch. They do best with soft, fine substrate — avoid sharp gravel that can damage their barbels.
4. Platies — colorful and easy
Platies come in dozens of color varieties and are nearly as hardy as guppies. They're livebearers (give birth to live young), peaceful community fish, and eat any food. Great for a mixed community tank. Like guppies, they breed easily — plan accordingly.
5. Betta Fish — the solo king
Bettas are stunning but need to be kept alone (males fight to the death). They're perfect for a single-species 5-10 gallon tank. Easy to feed, don't need a heater above 72°F, and come in incredible colors and fin shapes. One of the most popular fish in the world for good reason.
Hikari Micro Pellets
The #1 rated food for small tropical fish including guppies, tetras, and danios. Highly digestible, won't cloud water.
